Photo: The road to Wythop Mill

This little cottage is situated in the tiny tucked away hamlet of Wythop Mill at the entrance to the secluded valley behind Sale Fell described so enthusiastically by Alfred Wainwright in his famous guide.  Lying between the market towns of Keswick and Cockermouth, on an unfrequented back-road, there are a number of quiet walks on the lanes and fell paths that you can take direct from the door of Sty Cottage.  Those to Sale Fell and Ling Fell are the nearest and not too demanding!  Bassenthwaite Lake and Wythop Woods are within walking distance.

In the nearby valley and woods there are deer, badgers, red squirrels and many species of birds.  You may catch sight of dippers on the stream, kingfishers on the river and even peregrine or osprey overhead. For trips further afield, the main road is less than a mile away, offering easy access to the northern lakes, valleys and fells. There are excellent local inns nearby, outdoor activities available and a range of places of interest to visit.
